Polypipe prevents years of potential flooding at South Kidderminster estate in just one day

It makes sense to ensure projects on any scale include making space for water – not just for the multifunctional benefits it can bring, but also for the impact climate change can have on our urban and suburban landscapes.

South Kidderminster’s Linnet Rise housing estate is a real example of why this is so important. In 2007, hundreds of residents were left worrying about the future of their homes after floodwater and sewers straining under the pressure caused significant damage to houses in the area. Continuing development and a lack of suitable drainage in the surrounding highway network only compounded the problem.

Today the area, with its new, innovative water management drainage system, is equipped for severe rainfall; with the ability to now capture rainwater at source, intercept floodwater run-off, store it and reduce the strain on the sewer system to ensure waste is carried away during severe weather events.

To make best use of the available space, and limit the impact on the surrounding homes, Polypipe devised an effective, retrofit SuDS solution made up of Polystorm geocellular units.

Strong but light in weight, the units were ideal for installation beneath two car parks to capture and store large amounts of rainwater thanks to their high void ratio. The system was laid on a gradient, to allow for the rainwater to naturally flow, flushing out sediment and without the need for the additional cost of pumps or valves.

To further promote water flow, three channels were fitted to each tank. And for easy maintenance, inspection points were installed along their length. Manufactured off-site, the entire system was delivered and installed in just one day with all important components included – keeping costs low and minimising disruptions.
